Georgia Football 2011: QB Hutson Mason Mulling Transfer

Could Aaron Murray's backup be leaving Athens? The Marietta native is considering a transfer out of UGA for a shot at starting.

There is certainly no quarterback controversy at the University of Georgia, which might be causing a smaller controversy on its own. Redshirt sophomore quarterback Aaron Murray is firmly in place as the Bulldogs' starter now and for the foreseeable future, with prep star Brice Ramsey set to commit to UGA and arrive in 2013.

Where that leaves sophomore Hutson Mason is unclear, and the backup told the Macon Telegraph he's thought about transferring. Mason has appeared in four games over two season in clean-up roles. Mason did not indicate if he has decided on a transfer, but said he would talk with his family following Georgia's bowl game against Michigan State on January 2:

"It’s kept me up a lot of nights, I mean a lot," Mason said midway through the season. "It’s rough. I would probably have a lot of peace with it if I knew that, ‘Hey Aaron’s a junior or senior, and hey my time will come.’ But not getting redshirted and just knowing that me and him are the same year and knowing that the pros don’t look as good next year (for Murray), that my time’s ticking."

If Mason left, the short-term solution for a backup to Murray would likely be sophomore Christian LeMay, who like Mason has seen very little time in two seasons.
