Mark Richt, Texas A&M Rumors Segue Neatly Into Contract Extension Talk

And, yep, here we go. After a spate of rumors that the Texas A&M Aggies think they have a chance at drawing Georgia Bulldogs coach Mark Richt out of Athens, athletic director Greg McGarity says it's time to discuss a contract extension for Richt:

"Mark and I, we discussed for the first time today, moving forward," McGarity said Friday morning. "We've started that discussion, and I'm sure we'll talk further. We didn't have a lot of time today since he's got a huge (recruiting) weekend.

Many had presumed a contract extension would follow UGA's SEC East title run. Richt's name has been attached to a pair of other coaching searches, A&Ms' and Penn State's, both of which have seemed quite farfetched.

Richt has two years left on his current deal. He's currently the 10th highest-paid coach in the nation, making nearly $1 million more than Mike Sherman made in College Station.

Mark Richt, Texas A&M Rumors: Georgia AD Shoots Down Chatter

So, yeah, there are rumors that Georgia Bulldogs coach Mark Richt could leave for Texas A&M. He quite positively won't do such a thing, but that's not the point. There are College Station-centric rumors that he will, which is what we're here to talk about. UGA athletic director Greg McGarity, for one, has also talked about them:

Marc Weiszer@marcweiszer #UGA AD Greg McGarity on Mark Richt's involvement in Texas A&M opening: "No truth whatsoever." AD, coach in Tampa today for bowl function.

AJC UGA@ajcuga #UGA AD Greg McGarity says no truth to Texas A&M talk re: Mark Richt. "Just a bunch of rumors flying around."

And back it went to Texas:

Chuck Carlton@ChuckCarltonDMN Uh, yes. RT @Andrew5979:@ChuckCarltonDMN "bunch of rumors" on the internet? Isn't that how Sherman got fired?

No, like, seriously guys. This isn't just GEORGIA FAN DENIAL talking. Mark Richt is not going to leave for the Texas A&M job. He makes a lot of money at a top-five program in top-five recruiting grounds. His young team is very talented. He gets to play Kentucky every year. He's going to trade that for the chance to play against Alabama and LSU forever, backed by a strapped athletic department? This is dumb.
