South Carolina Baseball Makes College World Series, Beating UConn 8-2

Stay connected for news and updates

The South Carolina Gamecocks trailed the Connecticut Huskies 2-0 for much of the Columbia Super Regional's Game 2, and were locked in a tie until the top of the eighth. But a strong finish for the Cocks gave them a 8-2 win over UConn, sending Carolina to its second-straight College World Series and keeping its hopes of back-to-back national titles alive.

Christian Walker added a home run in the eighth, then a country-strong, five-run barrage opened up in the top of the ninth. Carolina bats did damage as UConn endured multiple intentional walks, a struck batter and an error.

This is Carolina's 10th apperance in Omaha, second among all SEC teams behind the LSU Tigers. Two other SEC teams -- the Florida Gators and Vanderbilt Commodores -- also made the cut, with the North Carolina Tar Heels the only non-SEC to make it in so far.

The 2011 CWS is scheduled to begin June 18.
