Danny Wuerffel's Guillain-Barre Recovery Diary, In Which A Gator Considers A Turtle

Danny Wuerffel has offered a journal entry on his recovery from Guillain-Barre syndrome, detailing some demanding physical feats, along with both overtly religious moments and the kind of spiritual experience you won't find documented in any Biblical concordance:

I can get around the house pretty well and have started rehab. I'm doing some push-ups, knee bends (which is the medical term for wimpy squats without any weight), and have been able to ride the stationary bike a little (for all you folks who think now is the time to finally beat me at something, you better hurry up cause I'm coming back strong, baby! :) But in addition to getting stronger, I'm also learning a lot about strength.

And this morning at 5:45am, my teacher was a turtle. As he slowly walked across the yard, I wondered how long it would take for him to get to the bushes 10 feet away. But he stopped walking, stuck his head up and just sat still, like he was waiting for something. After about 30 minutes of watching a still turtle make no progress, I began a morning devotion.

Part of a pretty awesome read.

Danny Wuerffel's Illness, Diagnosed By SB Nation's Medical Expert

Resident SB Nation doctor Ali Mohamadi has weighed in on the likely condition of Florida Gators great Danny Wuerffel in light of the Heisman Trophy winner's hospitalization for Guillain-Barre Syndrome. The report continues the good news for those concerned about Wuerrfel's health and chance of recovery.

The analysis has all the details on GBS you could ever ask for, but here's part of Mohamadi's conclusion on Wuerffel:

In total, 70-80 percent of those who dedicate themselves to the demanding rehab process experience a complete recovery, with age being the most important prognostic factor overall: children and the elderly are far more likely to experience permanent deficits than young adults.

Mohamadi says rehab will involve intense physical training, something for which the former NFL quarterback should be prepared.

Danny Wuerffel Expected To Recover From Guillain-Barré Syndrome

Danny Wuerffel's executive assistant Sara Pace has confirmed the former Florida Gators QB has been hospitalized with Guillain-Barré Syndrome, releasing a statement that sounds like very, very good news. Pace shares the following quote from Desire Street Ministries board chair Luder Whitlock:

Fortunately, an early diagnosis identified the disease, permitting swift medical treatment. Consequently, his GBS specialist expects a full recovery. Meanwhile, Danny has asked me to express his appreciation for the prayers, love and support he has received during this time.

The statement also acknowledges that Wuerffel came down with the illness due to a stomach illness, likely the bug he mentioned getting in Colorado. True to form, Wuerrfel asks that gifts be made to his ministry rather than to himself.

Guillain-Barré Syndrome can lead to paralysis if not treated quickly. Recovery times can vary widely, but this is excellent news either way.

Danny Wuerffel Hospitalized With Guillian-Barre Syndrome, According To Report

Florida Gators Heisman Trophy winner Danny Wuerffel is receiving treatment at a Birmingham hospital for Guillian-Barre syndrome, reports the Gainesville Sun's Pat DooleyThe ailment is defined as "a serious disorder that occurs when the body's defense (immune) system mistakenly attacks part of the nervous system. This leads to nerve inflammation that causes muscle weakness."

He'd reportedly been complaining of losing feeling in his limbs after catching a "stomach bug" during a trip to Colorado.

The recovery period can last anywhere from days to years, but most sufferers are able to recover. The worst cases can quickly lead to paralysis in a matter of hours. There isn't a cure, but treatment is available that can help manage and prevent complications.

Best wishes to a SEC great and a man with a sterling off-field reputation. Among Wuerffel's post-football activities has been working to help develop poorer communities in New Orleans. After the news of Godfrey Myles' sudden passing, it's already been a hard enough month for Florida supporters.
