Florida Baseball Survives Mississippi State, Earns College World Series Bid

The Florida Gators advanced to the 2011 College World Series with a 8-6 win over the Mississippi St. Bulldogs in the Gainesville Super Regional. The series looked to be in hand after a Game 1 Florida blowout, but Missy State forced a Game 2 and held their own in Game 3 before coming up just short.

Nick Vickerson made a game of it in the seventh with a RBI single, following it with a steal of second and an eventual score thanks to Brent Brownlee. One Florida fan openly already hoped for Vickerson to be framed for dogfighting between the seventh and ninth inning, yet he is already a Bulldog. Preston Tucker countered in the bottom of the inning with a three-run shot of his own, deep over C.T. Bradford's head in center field.

Florida advances to their second-straight CWS, the seventh in program history, joining the Vanderbilt Commodores among SEC teams in Omaha.

Vanderbilt Baseball Finally Reaches College World Series, Knocking Out Oregon State

The Vanderbilt Commodores are the SEC's first representative and the second overall team in the 2011 College World Series, pounding the Oregon St. Beavers 9-3 in Nashville after posting an 11-1 victory Friday night. As it stands at the moment they're the No. 2 seed behind the North Carolina Tar Heels, but the final round's bracket has a lot of filling in left.

Vanderbilt baseball has never made the CWS before, having fallen in the NCAA Tournament five years in a row.

The Commodores faced a 2-2 tie as late as the fifth inning, when Jason Esposito scored Anthony Gomez on a fielder's choice, but the real damage came in the four-run sixth. Aaron Westlake posted a home run and ended up with six RBI for the night. Will Clindard takes the win, having thrown four and two-thirds innings and giving up only two hits while fanning eight batters.
