Georgia vs. Kentucky: Hutson Mason remains patient

Hutson Mason is Aaron Murray's backup and he'd really like to keep it that way this season. It would allow him an opportunity to redshirt and compete for more playing time next season.

Georgia backup quarterback Hutson Mason is in a bit of an awkward position this season, but he's handling it as best he can. Mason is planning on redshirting this season to gain class separation from starter Aaron Murray, but he's also on stand-by just in case something happens to Murray and he's forced to go in and play.

As much of a team player as Mason appears to be, that doesn't take away from his desire to get his shot as a starter. He even considered transferring after last season, before UGA head coach Mark Richt and offensive coordinator Mike Bobo talked him out of it.

While Mason still works at the second-team quarterback at UGA practices, his workload isn't quite the same as it was last season. There's also Christian LeMay and Parker Welch taking reps with the second team, but Mason said it's been pretty close to what he expected coming into the season.

Here he is quoted in an article from the Augusta Chronicle:

"Just always trying to stay ready, which really hasn't changed throughout my whole career. Most kids get the redshirt and they get to take the year off, but I don't. I'm traveling with the team and at any moment coach Bobo's told me I could have to go in. I put in all the work, but I'm hoping I don't get the reward, which is weird and stinks. I am where I'm at."
