Georgia Football: Mark Richt considering heading up special teams

Kevin C. Cox

With the struggles the Georgia Bulldogs special teams unit has experienced this season, head coach Mark Richt said he just might coach them himself next season.

Georgia head coach Mark Richt said he's considering coaching the special forces unit himself next season. The Bulldogs have struggled in a variety of areas in special teams this season - from punt returns to extra points, and net punting, where the Dawgs rank last in the SEC.

To add to the punting struggles, UGA doesn't appear to have anyone on the coaching staff with the appropriate level of expertise to give the punters like freshman Collin Barber the proper direction when they need it. Barber still relies on a personal kicking coach. Right now, UGA assistants share special teams duties, but there is no specific special teams coach.

Richt, who will coach UGA for his 13th season in 2013, said he's interested in learning what he needs to know to coach the unit himself. He said he does have enough time to do it, so it'd go a long way if he stepped up, rather than having to hire a new coach or let one of his go.

"First of all, you can assign someone within your staff to do it or if you don't then that means if there's no attrition, you're going to fire somebody to hire a special teams coordinator," he told the Athens Banner-Herald. "I don't know if I'm interested in doing that."
