Mark Richt described Wednesday how Georgia's leading receiver Michael Bennett tore his ACL. Bennett, who leads the teams in catches, yards and touchdowns, was injured during the last play of practice on Tuesday.

Georgia Bulldogs coach Mark Richt commented Wednesday about the loss of star receiver Michael Bennett to a season-ending ACL injury. Bennett tore his ACL near the end of practice on Tuesday. Through the first five games of the season, Bennett led the Dawgs in receptions (24), receiving yards (345) and touchdowns (four).

"It’s very sad that it happened," coach Mark Richt said, according to blogger Marc Weiszer. "It happened on the very last play of practice yesterday. It was a heck of a practice, really. Everybody was working hard. Everybody had a good attitude, scout teamers were getting after it, giving us a good look, everything you’d hope for a Tuesday practice we were having."

According to Richt, Bennett's knee buckled while he was blocking. Bennett will need reconstructive surgery, but no time has been set for that yet. Bennett's injury could lead to more opportunities for sophomore receiver Malcolm Mitchell.

"With Bennett’s injury, we’re going to be using him more offensively," Richt said.

Georgia takes on South Carolina this Saturday in a battle of top-10 teams.
