FCS Playoffs 2011, Georgia Southern Vs. Old Dominion: Eagles Advance To Quarterfinals

Georgia Southern is still alive in the FCS playoffs, advancing to play Maine in the quarters.

FCS Playoffs 2011: Georgia Southern Defeats Old Dominion 55-48

The Georgia Southern Eagles was able to break away from the back and forth scoring of this game in the fourth quarter to outscore the Old Dominion Monarchs and move onto the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs. This game was an offensive showcase as both teams combined for 1,167 yards and 103 points. Neither team led by more than seven points. That is until Georgia Southern scored at the end of the third quarter and made a defensive stop to score again in the fourth quarter to go up 14 points. 

Old Dominion was never able to make that key defensive stop in the fourth quarter and trailed from the end of the third quarter and for the rest of the game.

Georgia Southern was able to use the running game to get past Old Dominion as they rushed for 477 yards and seven of the eight touchdowns came from running game. The leader on the ground was Dominique Swope who ran the ball 31 times for 255 yards and scored four touchdowns to lead Georgia Southern to victory.

With the win Georgia Southern moves onto the quarterfinals of the FCS playoffs where they will play either Appalachian State or Maine.

FCS Playoffs 2011: Georgia Southern, Old Dominion Tied 28-28 At Halftime

The Georgia Southern-Old Dominion match up has lived up to its billing with both teams combining for 56 points and over 600 yards of total offense in the first half. When the dust settled, Georgia Southern and Old Dominion entered halftime with the score tied at 28-28. 

Georgia Southern got on the board first with a Jaybo Shaw touchdown run but the two teams have alternated touchdowns the remainder of the first half. The Eagles didn't punt in the first half but have the game's only turnover. 

Jaybo Shaw is five of six in the first half passing for 91 yards and a score. Dominique Swope has 84 yards rushing and is followed closely by Robert Brown with 83. Darreion robinson has 51 yards on the ground and a touchdown. 

Taylor Heinicke had a big first half for Old Dominion completing 11 of 19 passes for 184 yards and three touchdowns. Old Dominion spread the wealth on the ground in the first half with three different players having at least 28 yards rushing in the first half. Prentice Gill caught three passes in the first half for 72 yards and a score.
