Wofford Vs. Georgia Southern: Head coach Jeff Monken sees win as crucial

Georgia Southern takes on Wofford this Saturday, and it's must-win if they want a shot at successfully defending their Southern Conference title.

The Georgia Southern Eagles are in the biggest college football game around this weekend, taking on the Wofford Terriers. The Georgia Bulldogs and Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are on a bye, but Georgia Southern vs. Wofford is a Top 10 FCS matchup with some big implications, reports Mike Brown at the Macon Telegraph.

Reigning Southern Conference champions Georgia Southern is 4-1 and 3-1 in conference. Wofford is 3-0 in conference, so a win by the Eagles means that they can successfully defend their championship if they win out.

The two teams are remarkably well matched. Both rely on a rushing attack, with Wofford averaging 448 yards per game to Georgia Southern's 437. Neither have much of a passing attack, with the Terriers throwing 37 passes this year vs. 33 from the Eagles. Historically, Georgia Southern has an edge in the series, winning 11 of the 18 games. But it plays Wofford at home, and the home team hasn't lost since 2005.

Georgia Southern head coach Jeff Monken knows the importance of the game:

"The way the Southern Conference is shaking out, there are a lot of teams that have the chance to be there at the end. If we're going to be there we've got to win these kinds of games."

However it ends, it's sure to be a hard fought contest. Game time is 6 p.m. ET on Saturday.
