Georgia Southern vs. Chattanooga: Brent Russell poised to break sack record

Georgia Southern defensive tackle Brent Russell will look to break the GSU all-time sack record this Saturday against Chattanooga.

Georgia Southern defensive tackle Brent Russell thought he broke GSU's all-time sack record against Furman last week, but what originally looked like a sack and forced fumble against Furman quarterback Reese Hannon was deemed an incomplete pass.

So the senior heads into this weekend's game against Chattanooga still a half a sack behind Edward Thomas' record of 24 sacks set between 1993-96.

In an interview with Matt Yogus of the Statesboro Herald, Russell thought the play was close, but wasn't 100 percent if it was a sack or not,

"I didn't know if he flicked it, or if it came out when I hit him. It was pretty bang-bang, and they called it an incomplete pass, but I just like getting a hit on the quarterback."

Russell knows that the record is something that he will remember if he can break Thomas' mark, Russell just wants to make sure that the team continues their fast start to the season before he worries about his individual statistics.

"I didn't know about it until I was a sack away from it. What do I think about it? It would be great to have it one day to kind of look back on it, but I'm not thinking about it this year. I'm just trying to be productive for the team."

If there is one thing that could stop Russell from setting the record Saturday, it could be a lingering foot injury that he reaggravated against Furman. Russell spent Monday's practice on crutches and in a walking boot, but Russell told Yogus that the boot was precautionary and doesn't expect to miss any playing time.

"I expect to be 100 percent. I played the whole game and didn't feel it until (Sunday). I'll be 100 percent for Saturday."

Georgia Southern will take on Chattanooga on Oct. 27 at Finley Stadium in Chattanooga, Tenn. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m. ET.
