Samford vs. Georgia Southern: Versatility paying off for the Eagles

Georgia Southern coach Jeff Monken is looking for ways to get his most dynamic players more involved.

When Georgia Southern hosts Samford on Saturday, it shouldn't be a surprise if GSU coach Jeff Monken slots his best players at multiple positions. Following the Eagles' 23-21 loss to The Citadel on Sept. 8, Monken looked for new ways to get junior Jerick McKinnon involved in the offense. The following week, he put him in at three different positions. According to the Statesboro Herald, McKinnon played "quarterback, slotback and fullback" in GSU's Sept. 15 victory over Elon.

"He’s a talented kid who we think can be a productive player with the ball in his hands," Monken said. "We didn’t manage to do that very well (against The Citadel), but we’re trying. He’s a powerful runner, he’s a fast kid, and I think he can play a lot of different places for us."

Defensive lineman Brent Russell also has seen playing time at multiple positions this season. Russell moves over to defensive end in some packages, and practiced on the offensive line during preseason camp. Look for Monken to continue trying to get Russell, McKinnon and others involved as much as possible as the season progresses.
