It's not rare a team gives up 50 points and wins by three possessions in basketball. Georgia Tech did it Saturday in football.
The 118 combined points were the most ever in an ACC game. Eleven players scored touchdowns, and the two teams totaled 1,085 yards of offense. Punting enthusiasts only saw five of their favorite play Saturday at Kenan Memorial Stadium.
Georgia Tech coach Paul Johnson got it right, according to Ken Sugiura of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution:
"It was a crazy game. It didn't seem like the game was ever going to end."
It did eventually, but not before a wild second half in which North Carolina eventually came as close as 58-50. The Tar Heels actually led 29-28 at halftime, but Georgia Tech's Jamal Golden took the second half-opening kickoff 100 yards for a touchdown. It was his second kickoff return touchdown in three games, and it sparked a 30-point third quarter for the Yellow Jackets.
Said Johnson, again via Sugiura:
"A flashback. I've been in a couple of those at Navy. That's the first one I've been in here, but I'm proud of our guys."
