Georgia Tech Vs. Maryland: Jackets 6-0, First Time Since Bobby Dodd Era

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are 6-0 for the first time since 1966, Bobby Dodd's last season as White and Gold head coach. But but but what about the 1990 national title season, you say? Tech suffered a tie to go 5-0-1 before its sixth win, you see. It's the details.

That '66 team reached 9-0 before falling against the No. 7 Georgia Bulldogs and then the Florida Gators in the Orange Bowl. Tech concluded the year ranked No. 8.

Not to get even further ahead of ourselves, but the all-time Georgia Tech mark is the 1952 national champion team that went 12-0, including a Sugar Bowl victory over the Mississippi Rebels. See how far ahead of ourselves we're getting? This team hasn't even beaten Virginia yet.

Georgia Tech Vs. Maryland Final Score: Jackets Hang On, Become Bowl Eligible

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets got just enough out of their defense in the second half to make 21 points enough for a win over the Maryland Terrapins. The Jackets are now 6-0 and 3-0 in the ACC, making them the first team in the nation to become bowl eligible. With Texas getting plastered, look for Tech to move very close to the top 10.

The big story coming out of this game will be Maryland's quarterback situation. C.J. Brown and Danny O'Brien combined to go five-of-23, with wide receiver Tony Logan's sole pass netting almost half of Maryland's 87 passing yards. Other than one 77-yard touchdown sprint by Brown, Tech's defense clamped down pretty well.

Tevin Washington was the bulk of the Jackets offense, running for 120 yards and throwing for 114. David Sims added 83 and Stephen Hill caught 50.

Next for Tech: a trip to Virginia.

Georgia Tech Vs. Maryland Score: Jackets Have Fourth Quarter Lead To Nurse

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets entered the fourth quarter with a 21-3 lead over the poorly dressed Maryland Terrapins. The Terps have actually held Tech's offense in check for most of the game, with the Jackets putting up only 345 yards so far.

Maryland's C.J. Brown has been their only weapon, posting 39 yards on six attempts before breaking off a 77-yard sprint to make it 21-10 with about 12 minutes to go.

You'd think that would be a sign that Maryland might be able to battle back, but the Turtles offense hasn't done a darn thing all day. Dan O'Brien and Brown each threw a pick, with all three Maryland passers combining to go two-of-16 ... could this be the first game in Georgia Tech flexbone history in which Tech completes more passes than a FBS foe? Not even gonna look it up! Just gonna assume it might be! It might be, I don't know.

Georgia Tech Vs. Maryland Halftime Score: Yellow Jackets 14, Terrapins 3

One loves to run the ball, the other loves to pass.

The running game is winning thus far in Bobby Dodd Stadium.

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets has a 14-3 lead over the Maryland Terrapins with two rushing touchdowns coming on a 7-yard run from quarterback Tevin Washington and a 10-yard run from Orwin Smith. Georgia Tech has controlled possession with 177 rushing yards in the first 30 minutes on 92nd ranked Terrapins defense.

Maryland was able to put together a 14-play, 68-yard drive midway in the first quarter which led to a 30-yard field goal from Nick Ferrara.

After coming off of a strong 2010 campaign, Danny O'Brien's struggles have continued into this battle with the Yellow Jackets. O'Brien is just 1-6 passing for 17 yards and an interception.

Georgia Tech will get the ball to begin the second half and will look to put the game out of reach.

Georgia Tech Vs. Maryland Score: Jackets Post Saturday's First Touchdown

The quick-strike Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets lived up to their reputation on their opening drive against the Maryland Terrapins, scoring on a Tevin Washington scramble from the seven-yard line. The eight-play, 66-yard effort made for the fifth time this season Tech has scored a touchdown on its first drive.

Maryland's uniforms are horrible. This is not breaking news.

Washington carried the load, running thrice for 31 yards. He also completed a 21-yarder to Tyler Melton

Maryland couldn't get anything going on their first effort, putting up seven yards before punting. It was a pretty good punt.

Gotta say, watching the Red River Shootout buildup on GameDay and then going straight to a drowsy Bobby Dodd Stadium littered with those appalling Maryland uniforms was jarring.

Georgia Tech Vs. Maryland Injuries: Yellow Jackets Most Likely Down Two Starting Linebackers

Both the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets and Maryland Terrapins will be down multiple defenders for Saturday's game. The biggest injury in the game comes on the Maryland side who most likely be without starting linebacker Kenny Tate who is doubtful with an undisclosed injury. Tate is arguably the best defender for Maryland and will be missed in going up against Georgia Tech's rushing attack which is No. 1 in the nation. On the year Tate has recorded 35 tackles, two interceptions and a forced fumble. Redshirt freshman Mario Rowson is the likely replacement for Tate.

Here is the full injury report for Maryland:

• Out for Season: DB Matt Robinson and TE Dave Stinebaugh

• Out for Game: DL Justin Anderson, LB Darin Drakeford, OL Justin Gilbert, LB Garrett Lederman, DL Andre Monroe, DL Isaiah Ross and LB Shaquan Virgil

• Doubtful: LB Kenny Tate

• Probable: PK Nick Ferrara and TE Matt Furstenburg

As for Georgia Tech they have two starting linebackers who are questionable in Jeremiah Attaochu and Daniel Drummond and will be without backup linebacker Brandon Watts was downgraded from doubtful to out. None of the three players practiced all week.

Here is the full injury report for Georgia Tech:

• Out for Season: S Fred Holton  and DL Jimmie Kitchen

• Out for game:  LB Brandon Watts

• Questionable:  LB Jeremiah Attaochu  and LB Daniel Drummond

Georgia Tech Vs. Maryland Odds Update: Yellow Jackets More Than Two Touchdown Favorite At Home

Georgia Tech has seen their line move from 14  to 14.5 points as the weekend approaches. According to Oddshark.com, 64 percent of all bettors are taking the Yellow Jackets and laying the points

The total number for the game came out at 63 and 70 percent at Oddshark are taking the over. With the Yellow Jackets averaging 51.6 points per game by themselves, that might not be such a bad bet.

In fact, the Yellow Jackets have been over the number in all five of their games this season. Maryland has gone over the number in four of its last six contests. However, Maryland is just 2-2 in totals betting this season. The Terrapins have been held under the number in each of their last two outings.

Georgia Tech Vs. Maryland: Kenny Tate Injury Could Leave Terps Without Best Defender

Already faced with a difficult task of slowing down Georgia Tech's high powered offense, the task may have just gotten much more difficult for the Maryland Terrapins with star linebacker Kenny Tate listed as doubtful on the team's injury report.

If Tate is unable to play, then redshirt freshman Mario Rowson is likely to serve as the replacement. Rowson is a converted cornerback that moved to linebacker at the same time Tate made the switch from safety. Tate has been credited with 35 total tackles this season and also has two interceptions.

Maryland's defensive unit has been hit hard by injury this season and six of the seven players listed on the injury report as being out for this game are on defense. That isn't counting Tate or defensive back Matt Robinson who is out for the season.

Georgia Tech Vs. Maryland Series History: Things Have Changed Since 2007

As the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets prepares to do battle with the Maryland Terrapins in Bobby Dodd Stadium this Saturday at Noon, one thing is evidently clear. Things were a lot different in 2007.

The head coach of the Yellow Jackets in 2007 was Chan Gailey, not Paul Johnson. The head coach of the Terrapins in 2007 was Ralph Friedgen, not Randy Edsall. In 2007, Georgia Tech was a middle of the road team at 3-2, now they boast an undefeated 5-0 record and a No. 13 national ranking. In 2007, Maryland was outfitted with run of the mill apparel by Nike. In 2011, they've signed up with Under Armour and become outfitted with the most striking uniforms in college football.

Georgia Tech comes into this matchup with a 13-6 series lead against Maryland, including winning three of the last four. In the last matchup in 2007, Maryland defeated Georgia Tech 28-26 as the Terps raced out to a 21-3 early in the second quarter. Tech stormed back behind Tashard Choice's 135 rushing yards and Demaryius Thomas' 139 receiving yards and closed the gap to 28-26 late in the fourth quarter. Down by two, Gailey called for the two-point conversion which ultimately failed, thus losing the game for the Yellow Jackets.

Jeremiah Attaouchu Injury: Georgia Tech Star LB Questionable Vs. Maryland

Two of Georgia Tech's starting linebackers, OLB Jeremiah Attaochu and ILB Daniel Drummond, may not be able to play in the Yellow Jackets game this Saturday against Maryland.

According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution, neither player practiced Monday and both were rated as questionable by coach Paul Johnson:

"I don’t know if he’ll play, but he’s O.K.," Johnson said of Attaochu. "We’re not going to have to shoot him or anything."

Johnson said Drummond’s injury "might be a tad worse" than Attaochu. Both sustained leg injuries in Tech’s win over N.C. State Saturday.

Attaochu, a 6'2 235 sophomore, has emerged as a star this season. He was named the FWAA/Bronco Nagurski National Defensive Player of the Week after a dominating performance against UNC last weekend, with 9 tackles, 3 sacks, a forced fumble and one pass deflection in Tech's 35-28 victory over the Tar Heels.

If neither player recovers by Saturday, their likely replacements are special teamers Malcolm Munroe and Quayshawn Nealy.

Georgia Tech Vs. Maryland Odds: Jackets Open As Two Touchdown Favorite Over The Terrapins

Georgia Tech has been on quite a roll this season and that is expected to continue as they open as a two touchdown favorite over Maryland. OddShark.com currently reports that 60 percent of the people betting on the game are laying the points and taking the Yellow Jackets at home.

Tech is 4-0-1 against the spread this season with that push coming last week in the 45-35 victory over N.C. State. The Yellow Jackets are 5-1-1 in its last seven games at home but just 2-4 in its last six when playing Maryland against the spread.

The Terrapins are 1-3 against the spread this season with their lone cover coming against Miami in the season opener. Maryland defeated Towson last time out but failed to cover the 26 point spread.

Georgia Tech Football Schedule 2011: Maryland Begins New Era Under Randy Edsall

Randy Edsall steps in as coach of the Terrapins replacing Ralph Friedgen after Maryland finished 9-4 which was its best season in five years. Edsall led Connecticut from FCS Football to prominence and a Big East Championship during his time there. Maryland presents a completely different challenge and Edsall's old school approach to Football might just be able to get the job done.

A Closer Look At The Terrapins
Coach: Randy Edsall
Last Season: 9-4, 5-3 ACC Atlantic
Returning Starters: 14 (seven offensive, seven defensive)
Key Players: QB Danny O'Brien, LB Kenny Tate, LB Demetrius Hartsfield

Edsall and his staff inherit last season's ACC Rookie of the Year in quarterback Danny O'Brien who threw for over 2400 yards and 22 touchdowns as a true freshman. The wide receiver position is an area of concern as both top receivers are gone from last year's squad. The running back job falls to senior Davin Meggett who rushed for over 700 yards last season in a part time role.

The coaching staff also inherits an experienced defensive unit particularly in their front seven. Defensive tackles A.J. Francis and Joe Vellano give the Terps a strong anchor up front for a fast linebacking corps. Former safety Kenny Tate is making the move to linebacker this season but the rest of the secondary is underrated.

Randy Edsall Replaces Ralph Friedgen As Maryland Head Coach; Coached With Friedgen At Georgia Tech In 1998

The Maryland Terrapins have officially announced the hiring of longtime Connecticut Huskies coach Randy Edsall to replace Ralph Friedgen.

Before taking over UConn in 1999 and leading them from Division II to a BCS game last night, Edsall was George O’Leary’s defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech in 1998. Many Tech fans rue that defense to this day, as it ranked 50th in the nation and gave up 41 points in the season’s first game against the Boston College Eagles, one of Tech’s only two losses that season. Still, the Jackets finished with a top-10 AP ranking in ‘98, so it couldn’t have been all THAT bad.

The offensive coordinator of that ’98 team? Ralph Friedgen.

Edsall went 74-70 during UConn’s Division I and FBS period. Maryland has yet to announce the rest of Edsall’s coaching staff, and no major reports have emerged on that front.
