The 2011 Sun Bowl is a rematch of the 2005 Emerald Bowl where Utah defeated Georgia Tech 38-10, but this time around Utah will be focusing on stopping the vaunted triple-option offense that Georgia Tech instead of a passing attack. The Utah coaching staff and defense is familiar with the triple-option attack that Georgia Tech runs after years of facing the Air Force Falcons who run a similar offense when in the Mountain West.
This game will be a battle of Georgia Tech's rushing offense, which is ranked No. 2 in the nation, against Utah's rushing defense which is ranked No. 8 in the country. However, Utah will be without starting defensive tackle Dave Kruger who has a leg infection and will be replaced by James Aiono.
Georgia Tech will also be missing players in offensive tackle Phil Smith and cornerback Louis Young who are not playing due to disciplinary reasons.
Georgia Tech will be looking to get their first bowl victory since 2004 when they defeated Syracuse in the Champs Sports Bowl.
