Georgia Tech Vs. Clemson: Yellow Jacket defense struggling mightily

Joshua S. Kelly-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

The Georgia Tech defense has been the team's undoing during the team's three game losing streak, giving up huge amounts of yards and points.

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets' defense has been a huge issue during the team's current three game losing streak. They've given up at least 42 points in each of the last three games, and surrender huge swathes of yardage at a time.

The yardage totals for those three games -- 609, 510, 601 -- represent three of the five highest totals surrendered by a Paul Johnson coached team in his career. The team repeatedly missed tackles in the backfield that could have bottled up Clemson's potent offense, and mistakes in all aspects of the defense were common.

Defensive coordinator Al Groh was back on the sideline against Clemson after going up into the coaches booth for the Yellow Jackets' loss to Miami. Groh, along with secondary coach Charles Kelly and injured linebacker Quayshawn Nealy, signaled in plays to the defense using big picture cards, similar to how the Oregon Ducks call plays from the sideline for their offense. However, Georgia Tech's defense did not achieve a similar level of success as what Oregon enjoys.
