Al Groh fired: Paul Johnson wasn't seeing progress from defense

Georgia Tech's defense continued to make the same mistakes over and over again, which contributed to Paul Johnson's decision to part ways with defensive coordinator Al Groh.

The Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets fired defensive coordinator Al Groh on Monday, the school announced. Head coach Paul Johnson addressed the media to discuss the situation, and when asked about his reasons for making this change, Johnson said he just wasn't seeing the improvement he wanted to see on the defensive side of the ball. He noted that the Jackets have still been making far too many errors:

"This morning, I took some time and watched the game tape and went over it. There's no question Al knows defense, but the communication part wasn't transcending to the field. Lots of errors, struggles getting lined up, errors that kept repeating themselves."

Johnson added that he didn't have any confidence that the situation would improve under Groh, so he felt it was time to move on.

The Yellow Jackets have lost three games in a row and given up at least 40 points in all three losses. They rank just 90th in FBS in total defense and 89th in scoring defense. Since Groh became the defensive coordinator at Georgia Tech prior to the 2010 season, the Jackets have not finished a season ranked higher than 44th in total defense.
