Al Groh fired: Georgia Tech moving on

Joshua S. Kelly-US PRESSWIRE - Presswire

Georgia Tech head coach Paul Johnson talked about some small differences in the defense going forward following the dismissal of ex-defensive coordinator Al Groh.

As the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets move on from the firing of defensive coordinator Al Groh, head coach Paul Johnson talked about some changes within the Georgia Tech defense.

In an interview with Ken Sugiura of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Johnson said that he will let his defensive assistant do what they think is best for the team, but will stress going with a simpler scheme.

"Certainly, we want to be multiple enough that we can play, but we want to be sound. I don't want to come in Monday and have 40 missed assignments. It's not going to do you any good."

Johnson also told Sugiura that the defense will practice at a higher tempo in practice and use more live-hitting drills, something that was lacking under Groh.

"It's not like we didn't tackle in practice, but the pace of practice is a little bit different than what it will be."

Johnson also said that the team will focus on pursuit and tackling drills, which according to Johnson are, "some of those things that we haven't been as good at."
