The Players Championship 2012: Matt Kuchar Holds Two Shot Lead Heading Into Final Hole

Matt Kuchar heads to the 18th and final hole of the 2012 edition of The Players Championship with a two shot lead after a birdie at No. 16 gave him just a little cushion but returned the stroke with a bogey at 17.

After hitting the water on No. 17 during the third round, Kuchar had no trouble on Sunday landing safely on the middle of the island green. However his first putt ran by the hole and he missed the par attempt coming back up the hill to record a bogey.

The birdie at No. 16 is big for Kuchar because of the charge that Rickie Fowler is making as he wraps up his round. Fowler finished up his day with birdies at 16 and 17 before lipping out a birdie attempt at 18.

Players Championship 2012 Leaderboard: Three Tied For The Lead After Second Round

Zach Johnson, Matt Kuchar, and Kevin Na share the lead after the second round of The Players Championship. Going into the weekend the three men are each sitting at 8-under par.

Johnson had the low round of the day, shooting an impressive score of 66. Kuchar kept pace with a round of 68, while Na recorded a 69.

Tiger Woods briefly found himself in danger of missing his second straight cut before going on a run late in his round, at one point converting birdies on four straight holes. Woods finished with a 68 for the day and is currently at 2-under par for the tournament.

Unfortunately for Rory Mcllroy, he will not have the opportunity to compete this weekend. The world's No. 1-ranked player shot a 76, continuing his career long woes at the Players. He has now failed to make the cut all three times he has played the TPC Sawgrass.

The Players Championship 2012: Ian Poulter and Martin Laird Lead, Matt Kuchar 4-Under

Sawgrass had been known to leave victims in its wake.

But Ian Poulter and Martin Laird had little trouble in the first round of The Players Championship on Thursday. The pair each shot a 7-under 65 and sit atop the leaderboard after one day. They both birdied every par 5 and Poulter made first straight birdies at one point, while Laird didn't have a bogey.

Former Georgia Tech All-American Chris Kuchar is tied for sixth after shooting a 4-under 68. He shot a 34 on both the front and back nine. Another former Yellow Jacket, Stewart Cink is at 1-under.

Of course, the most notable golfer at the tournament is Tiger Woods. But Woods shot a 2-over 74 and is in danger of missing another cut, something that surely will be a media focus on Friday.

Players Championship 2012 Leaderboard: Matt Kuchar At -4 After Early Action

The first golfers are back in the clubhouse in the first round of the 2012 Players Championship on Thursday, which is widely seen as the "5th major" on the PGA Tour.

Former Georgia Tech All-American Matt Kuchar is one of the early leaders, with a first-round score of -4, three shots behind Ian Poulter at -7. Stewart Cink, a Duluth native, is currently at E through six holes.

Almost all of the big names on the Tour are in Sawgrass this weekend for the TPC, which has the biggest payouts of the golf season.

Tiger Woods struggled Thursday, as the former world's No. 1 continues his recent run of bad luck in major tournaments. He finished the first round at +2, currently tied for 115. Phil Mickelson and Rory McIlroy are currently tied at -2 on the fifth hole of Day 1.
