... the Reds lost 6-5 to the Cardinals, despite former Brave outfielder Ron Gant's two-home run. As a result of the loss, NL East-leading Atlanta's magic number dipped to 26.

Also, the Braves completed a road series sweep of the Astros. Future Braves righty Mike Hampton absorbed the third loss for Houston. Atlanta held the league lead for the rest of the season, going on to win the World Series.
