Georgia State Football Plays Inaugural Game Thursday Night Against Shorter

We've got a pair of Georgia State preview features going up throughout the week, so let's learn five things about the Shorter University Hawks.

  • Shorter is a member of the NAIA's Mid South Conference. They're based in Rome, Georgia and went 6-5 last year.
  • They lost their opener at number 12 West Alabama on August 27.
  • The Hawks run a "triple-option offense similar to Georgia Tech's." [Pedantic note about triple option being a play, not an offense.] Their defense plays a 3-4, which we can say is similar to Georgia Tech's without getting all nitpicky.
  • Their head coach, Phil Jones, is 32-23 in six seasons as head Hawk. He won a series of very acronymmy awards in 2008.
  • Here's an encouraging sign for Panther fans: Shorter has never had a losing season since taking up football in 2005.
