Tonight, Atlanta Hosts Its First Pro Championship Game In 3,981 Days

On Oct. 24, 1999, the Atlanta Braves lost, 7-2, to the Yankees in Game 2 of the World Series.

  • Since then, the closest they've come to returning to the Series was game two of the 2001 NLCS, when they tied up the Diamondbacks 1-1 before losing three straight.

  • The Falcons' deepest postseason run since '99 came in 2002, when they went to the NFC Championship. Down by only four to the Eagles at halftime, they ended up losing 27-10. Your correspondent largely blames a BS holding call on Todd McClure that would've given Atlanta a three-point third-quarter lead, if memory serves.

  • Having been blasted out of the Eastern Conference semifinals twice since 1999, its hard to say which Hawks season qualifies as its best effort, but at least they're consistent.

Tonight, the Dream host a pro title game. They're down 0-2 to the Storm in a best-of-five, so this could be the only game played here in this series, but still. There's pro championship basketball being played in our city tonight.
