Looking At The Thrashers' Recruitment Of Black Players

My home away from home St. Louis Game Time had a link in today’s AM links regarding the Thrashers and the players that they’ve targeted in the off season. Harrison, a black hockey player at the blog Pass It to Bulis stepped back and took a look see at an interesting trend: the potentially active recruitment of black hockey players.

Atlanta’s large middle-class African American population is a key market for a sport looking to grow its audience to market to, and Harrison believes that the best way to market is to have players on the team that people can relate to.

The Thrashers have done just that, scooping up 30 black hockey players – or twenty percent of all black players in the NHL. One-fifth of the league’s players of African descent play for the Atlanta Thrashers organization. That’s an impressive number. Harrison goes further in-depth in a great article that’s a must-read.
