Georgia Tech (7-8, 0-2) will be looking for their first conference win and trying to snap a three-game losing streak when they host North Carolina (12-4, 2-0) tonight.
The Tar Heels are coming off of at 64-61 win over Virginia Tech last Thursday night. North Carolina overcame a 16-point deficit behind John Henson and Tyler Zeller who had 17 and 16 points respectively. One of the most highly recruited freshman in the nation, Harrison Barnes, scored eight points in the last 3.5 minutes of the game as well.
Georgia Tech is coming off of a tough road loss at rival Clemson, losing 87-62. The Jacket's season-long struggles on field goal percentage defense continued again, as the Tigers shot 69.2% from the field and an astounding 11-14 (78.6%) from beyond the arc. The 69% is the second highest percentage allowed in school history, trailing only 70% from North Carolina in 1982.
The two teams met three times last year. On January 16th at Chapel Hill, the 12th-ranked Heels erased a 20-point deficit against the 20th ranked Jackets, but Zachery Peacock hit a shot with 25 seconds remaining to get Tech the 73-71 win on the road. The rematch on February 16th had much more breathing room, with the Jackets winning 68-51. The 51 points were the fewest scored by a Tar Heel team under Roy Williams. The finale to the trilogy on March 11th in the ACC tournament was another victory for Tech, winning 62-58 behind Derrick Favors 18 points.
Paul Hewitt has a winning record against two ACC coaches: Sidney Lowe, and Roy Williams. The Tar Heel coach, who has won two of the last six national championships, is only 6-7 against Hewitt.
The game tips-off tonight at 7:45 and can be seen on Fox Sports Net. It can be heard on 790 the Zone as well.
