Georgia Southern survived an offensive slugfest with Old Dominion 55-48 last week to advance in the NCAA FCS Playoffs and will host upstart Maine (9-3) at Paulson Stadium Saturday. The Black Bears, who finished last season 4-7, shocked the FCS ranks by upsetting Appalachian State 34-12 last week, preventing a rematch between GSU and the App State team that beat them in the regular season.
Much like Old Dominion, Maine boasts a high-octane offense, although a more balanced run/pass attack. Georgia Southern's triple option has found a bookend attack in recent weeks, as freshman fullback Dominique Swope has exploded in recent weeks, including a 255-yard effort against Old Dominion. Swope has taken over the B-back role in head coach Jeff Monken's offense, moving tailback Robert Brown (who needs less than 100 yards Saturday to achieve his second 1,000 yard-plus season) to A-back, where he gained 93 yards last week.
