2011 College Baseball Tournament, Corvallis Regional: Georgia Opens Against Creighton On The West Coast

The meaning of the word "regional," as interpreted by the NCAA Baseball Tournament selection committee, apparently is somewhat flexible — when the Bulldogs make the 2,000-mile trip to Oregon State for the Corvallis regional, they’ll be joined by Arkansas-Little Rock and Creighton University, which is in Omaha, Nebraska.

Georgia (31-30) opens against Creighton (44-14) at 4 p.m. EDT Friday. The Bluejays are making their third trip to the tournament under coach Ed Servais, but the program has made only one trip to the College World Series (1991, before the current tournament format was in place). This year’s squad won both the regular-season Missouri Valley Conference title and the conference tournament and is the only MVC representative in the NCAA tourney; according to RPI guru Warren Norman, the Bluejays currently hold Division I’s sixth-best record but built it against the 127th-toughest schedule.

The winners of the Georgia-Creighton and Oregon State-UALR matchups will face off Saturday night; overall winner of this regional will play the champion of the Nashville regional for a trip to the College World Series.
