According to Tony Pauline, who's written for Sports Illustrated and worked with Shutdown Corner, the Atlanta Falcons will add Yale Bulldogs DL Tom McCarthy to their growing crop of undrafted free agents. Pauline lists him as a "DE-OLB-LS."
As a junior, McCarthy was named Yale's captain, an honor he held as a senior as well, and the Ivy League player of the year. He started at defensive tackle, but has only recently bulked up to about 265 pounds, so if he's being picked up I'm sort of assuming it's for a little outside linebacker depth or perhaps those alleged long snapping talents. Either way, this looks like a move to potentially boost special teams manpower.
He reportedly worked out for the Giants, Bears and Patriots heading into the NFL Draft and was contacted by about eight more. At Fordham's pro day, he apparently turned in some impressive numbers -- a 4.72 40-yard dash and 35-inch vertical, for instance -- but pro days are like that.
He sounds like a pretty confident player that at least a few teams had their eyes on in April.
