Fresh off a 39-31 overtime win at Chattanooga, the Georgia Southern Eagles are ranked No. 1 in this week's FCS Coaches' Poll. It's the first time since Oct. 2011 that GSU has held the No. 1 spot.
The Eagles (7-1, 6-1 SoCon) have won six consecutive conference games since a 23-21 defeat at the Citadel Sept. 8. Georgia Southern sits a half game above Wofford (7-1, 5-1) in the Southern Conference standings, and the Eagles hold the tiebreaker with the Terriers thanks to a 17-9 win on Oct. 13.
Georgia Southern garnered 17 first-place votes and took over the top spot in the poll vacated by previous No. 1 Eastern Washington (6-2, 5-1 Big Sky), who lost, 30-27, at Southern Utah. EWU dropped to No. 8.
Next up for GSU is a home game against Appalachian State. It's the final conference game of the year for the Eagles, and with a win, they will clinch the SoCon title.
