Atlanta Braves reportedly closing in on B.J. Upton

The Braves are on the verge of signing a big-name free agent.

Kim Klement-US PRESSWIRE

The Atlanta Braves are closing in on free agent outfielder B.J. Upton, according to Jerry Crasnick of ESPN. There had been rumors of the Braves and Phillies leading for his services over the past few days, and now multiple sources are indicating a deal could be done shortly.

If he agrees to a deal with Atlanta, Upton would be the first top-tier free agent to sign this winter.

Upton, 28, has all of the tools and skills required to be a star. He's hit 51 home runs the past two seasons, and he's stolen upwards of 33 bases in every year since 2008. Combine his rare combination of speed and power with the fact that he should be entering his prime in the next few years, and it's easy to see why Upton is arguably the most attractive outfielder available this winter.

This is not a done deal as of 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday, although it does appear this could be a done deal soon. Stay tuned.
