In the first 2012 Women's College World Series game in the Athens regional, North Carolina staged a late rally and defeated Georgia Southern 2-1 on a walk-off hit-by-pitch in eight innings.
The game got to extras because UNC tied the game at one on a fielder's choice in the bottom of the sixth. Lori Spingola pitched all eight innings for the Tar Heels, giving up five hits while striking out six.
Sarah Purvis pitched all 7 2/3 innings for Georgia Southern, but hit UNC's Jordan Scarboro with a pitch in the bottom of the eighth with two outs, as Georgia Southern suffered a tough loss.
UNC was led at the plate by Kelli Wheeler, who went 2-for-3 with a run scored. For Georgia Southern, Andrea Tarashuk went 2-for-3 with an RBI.
