Post positions are often crucial for success in the Kentucky Derby, as they can make or a break a horses race right out of the gate. The post positions for the 2012 Kentucky Derby have been announced, and the two favorites, Bodemeister and Union Rags, will be starting just a horse apart to begin the race.
The post positions for the Kentucky Derby are as follows:
- Daddy Long Legs
- Optimizer
- Take Charge Indy
- Union Rags
- Dullahan
- Bodemeister
- Rousing Sermon
- Creative Cause
- Trinniberg
- Daddy Nose Best
- Alpha
- Prospective
- Went The Day Well
- Hansen
- Gemologist
- El Padrino
- Done Talking
- Sabercat
- I'll Have Another
- Liaison
The lower the number, the closer a horse is to the rail -- so Daddy Long Legs will be coming out of the gate as the closest horse to the rail, while Liaison will start on the far outside. Typically, it's better to be closer to the rail, but Big Brown did win the 2008 Kentucky Derby from the 20th post position.
