University of Georgia alum John Isner was upset in the first round of the 2012 Championships at Wimbledon on Monday, but the Grand Slam event continued along without him. On Tuesday, the first round of the most famous tournament in tennis moved into its second day.
Big names advanced on Tuesday, as expected. No. 2 seed Rafael Nadal comfortably defeated Thomaz Bellucci in straight sets, 7-6, 6-2, 6-3. Serena Williams achieved a measure of redemption for her first-round elimination at the 2012 French Open by defeating Barbora Zahlahova in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4.
Mardy Fish also advanced by defeating Ruben Ramirez 7-6, 7-5, 7-6. Petra Kvitova also advanced, as did Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, who dispatched Lleyton Hewitt.
