The Georgia Bulldogs went all out in their latest scrimmage of fall camp by hosting a "practice game," which they treated as a real game with officials, live kicking and substitutions. The game was set up to replicate Georgia's Week 1 opponents, the Buffalo Bulls, and ended with the Bulldogs winning 49-48.
The role of the Bulls was played by Georgia's scout team, who went up against the starters. If you're wondering why the score was so close, the scout team was spotted 35 points in the scrimmage.
The players treated this scrimmage as a real game, and they welcomed the change:
"To be honest, it was like a real game," said senior wide receiver Marlon Brown. "We left from the Butts-Mehre, went to the stadium, went to the locker room, did the team and individual warm-ups, listened to Coach Richt's speech and went out there and played. It's good because it's Georgia versus somebody else instead offense against the defense all the time."
The scrimmage was closed to the public and media, but stats were later released. Starting quarterback Aaron Murray had a big day, completing 20 of 25 passes for 253 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
The hotly contested running back battle saw freshman Todd Gurley lead all backs for the third straight scrimmage, tallying 54 yards on six carries and a touchdown. Sophomore Ken Malcome added 50 yards on six carries.
The defense was led by linebackers Mike Gilliard, who had four tackles. Amarlo Herrera had three tackles and returned an interception 23 yards for a touchdown.
