Denny Hamlin passed Carl Edwards with fewer than 40 laps remaining and pulled away from Jimmie Johnson over the final laps to win Saturday's Irwin Tools Night Race at the Bristol Motor Speedway. It is Hamlin's third win of the 2012 season, the 20th of his career, and his first-career win at the .533-mile concrete oval. It is also the 200th-ever victory for a car with No. 11 on its doors.
Johnson held off teammate Jeff Gordon for second, while Brian Vickers and Marcos Ambrose rounded out the top-five. Kyle Busch, Clint Bowyer, Joey Logano, Kasey Kahne, and Paul Menard rounded out the top-10.
Edwards, who led at the last restart, fell just inside the top-20 before running out of gas. He wound up a miserable 22nd.
Greg Biffle, Dale Earnhardt Jr., and Johnson all clinched spots in the 2012 Chase for the Sprint Cup. Biffle had a tough night, winding up 19th, while Earnhardt overcame a penalty for pitting before the pit lane was open to finish 12th.
With his win, Hamlin is now tied with Johnson, Brad Keselowski, and Tony Stewart for most triumphs on the season. If things stay as they are over the final two weeks, the quartet would begin the Chase with nine bonus points apiece thanks to those three wins.
