An upset of fifth-ranked Jo-Wilfried Tsonga and a spectacular comeback from American Mardy Fish highlighted the action from the 2012 U.S. Open on Thursday, as the tournament heats up in preparation for its first weekend.
Tsonga, who was considered by many to be a real threat at the tourney, instead went quietly in four sets to Slovakia's Martin Klizan, 6-4, 1-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Serena Williams cruised past Maria Jose Martinez Sanchez, 6-2, 6-4.
No. 1 Roger Federer had little trouble on Thursday advancing to the third round, topping Bjorn Phau of Germany, 6-2, 6-3, 6-2. Federer will next see No. 25 Fernando Verdasco, who is sure to be a tough test for the world's top-ranked player. It took American Mardy Fish five sets to join Federer the third round, but Fish completed a two-sets-down comeback, eliminating Nikolay Davydenko, 4-6, 6-7 (4-7), 6-2, 6-1, 6-2.
American James Blake, looking to make some noise as an unranked combatant in the men's draw, flew by Granollers in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4, 6-2. Blake next faces No. 15 Milos Raonic of Canada in the third round.
