Track and field was kind to the Americans on Wednesday, as a solid day there put the Americans on top of the overall medal count at the 2012 Olympics through Wednesday's events.
American Olympians lead all countries with 81 medals, including 34 gold medals. The United States has also captured 22 silver and 25 bronze medals.
China, however, leads the way in gold medals. Chinese Olympians have captured 36 gold medals so far, two more than the Americans. The Chinese also have captured 22 silver and 19 bronze medals.
Russia is a distant third, with 52 overall medals, including 11 gold. Host nation Great Britain is right on Russia's heels, with 48 overall medals. The British have 22 gold medals, however, double the Russians' total.
Germany rounds out the top five with 32 medals, but just seven of which are gold.
