At the U.S. Open on Monday, No. 1 Victoria Azarenka of Belarus defeated No. 7 Samantha Stosur of Australia, 6-1, 4-6, 7-6 (7-5). Stosur had the advantage in serve speed, aces and double faults in the overall match but found herself trailing early. After the first set, Stosur fought back winning the second set and forcing the third and decisive set into a tiebreaker before losing.
Azarenka did win more break points in the match, winning six to Stosur's four. She also held an advantage over Stosur in receiving points, winning 43 to Stosur's 36. In the match, Azarenka won 70 percent of her points on the first serve as well as 42 percent of first serve return points.
Azarenka now advances to the semifinals to face the winner of the match between No. 3 Maria Sharapova of Russia and No. 11 Marion Bartolli of France.
