Ekaterina Makarova and Bruno Soares defeated Marcin Matkowski and Kveta Peschkee to win the mixed doubles championship at The 2012 U.S. Open on Thursday. The title match went as far as it could go, heading into a decisive super tiebreak after sides split the two sets.
Matkowski and Peschkee jumped out to an early lead as they won the opening set in a tiebreak. Their advantage would not last, as Makarova and Soares dominated the second set, 6-1, before taking the match, 12-10, in the super tiebreak.
Makarova and Soares signed up for the draw just minutes before the deadline, and now can call themselves major champions.
The last two spots in the men's semifinals are up for grabs on Thursday, and the quarterfinal match between David Ferrer and Janko Tipsarevic is well under way. Ferrer took the first set 6-3 after falling behind a break in his first service game.
The winner of Tipsarevic and Ferrer advances to the semifinals against the winner of Novak Djokovic and Juan Martin Del Potro, who are both past champions in the even.
Djokovic and Del Potro meet to end the day at Arthur Ashe Stadium on Thursday night.
