If Billy Wagner can return to play in time for the NLCS, the Braves might try to win their NLDS series against the Giants without him:
Manager Bobby Cox said Saturday the team would try to get by with a 10-man staff if it thought Wagner could return for the NLCS in a week. He’ll be evaluated before Game 3 on Sunday afternoon.
The team has two options: replace Wagner and lose him until the World Series, or keep him on the postseason roster. The latter means fewer arms at Bobby Cox’s disposal for the time being, but an experienced closer for round two.
It all depends on whether Wagner’s oblique looks like it’ll heal quickly enough.
