Atlanta Braves Call Up Reliever Jairo Asencio For Extra Arm In Pen

The Braves called up reliever Jairo Asencio to fill a spot in the bullpen, demoting catcher J.C. Boscan to AAA Gwinnett, according to David O'Brien.

Asencio's call up means another arm for the bullpen, which is important right now as the Braves play a doubleheader Saturday and follow with a day game Sunday before beginning a road trip out West. The schedule is brutal considering there is no off day to travel, but the doubleheader makes it worse as the arms try to recover in time for the trip.

Asencio last pitched a full season in 2009 for AAA, throwing 71.1 innings with a 3.28 ERA and 2.63 FIP. That includes a 2.40 BB/9 and 9.46 K/9. Due to visa and identification problems, Asencio missed all of 2010. He has returned this year in full force, pitching four shutout innings with no walks and seven strikeouts. This was preceded by a solid Spring Training in which he made a case for traveling to Atlanta with the big club.

It is not known how long Asencio will be up in Atlanta, but he provides a dependable arm in case it is needed for the road trip, which is likely.
