The Atlanta Braves beat the New York Mets Thursday night in extra innings thanks to a balk by D.J. Carrasco, which Jason Heyward immediately spotted from the plate. The upper-body shimmy sent Diory Hernandez home from third base, concluding a late-innings comeback that saw the Braves rally from 8-6 down in the ninth.
Here's the video of an event that should not be, but is, because #LOLMETS.
As far as I can tell, the last game-winning balk occurred just a month ago, when Seattle Mariners pitcher Doug Fister handed a victory to the Minnesota Twins. It seems like it shouldn't happen all that often, but everything in baseball happens all the time.
Until Thursday the Braves hadn't achieved a balk-off since a 2008 game against the Colorado Rockies. Do you remember that? I sure don't. Maybe it's the extra-inningness that makes it seem like a bigger deal.
