It was reported late last night by multiple sources that Jordan Schafer had broken his nose and would be headed for the disabled list. This is not true. While doctors originally thought the nose was broken, it was simply the amount of swelling around his cheek had pressed against his nose so much that it appeared to be out of place and broken. The 24-year old outfielder thankfully avoided serious injury and will miss just a few days with a small sinus fracture near his upper right cheek.
This is terrific news for both Jordan, his family and the Braves. Not only does he avoid surgery, but assuming he’s feeling up to it, he could return to the lineup as early as Sunday night.
Joe Mather filled in and played center field on Saturday night for Atlanta. He didn’t do a bad job, but he’s certainly not as comfortable out there as Schafer is.
