There was a lot of anticipation for former Marlins Fredi Gonzalez and Dan Uggla's first return trip to Florida. However, it was ex Marlin Alex Gonzalez's home run that provided the game's only run and helped the Braves to a 1-0 win. Tommy Hanson and Brad Hand combined to duel for six innings before the bullpens took over.
Gonzalez's home run led off the fourth inning and was only one of two Atlanta hits. The other coming on a 9th inning single by Martin Prado.
Tommy Hanson pitched six shut out innings while allowing two hits and pitching around five walks. Hanson struck out six Marlins batters. Eric O'Flaherty, Jonny Venters, and Craig Kimbrel all pitched a scoreless inning of relief to seal the win for Atlanta.
Hanson pitched out of trouble in the 6th as he walked Chris Coghlan to lead off the inning. Hanson then struck out former Braves utility man Omar Infante and got Logan Morrison to fly out to center. He then walked Gaby Sanchez and Greg Dobbs to load the bases for Mike Stanton who ended the inning with a ground out to second.
Brad Hand takes the tough luck loss for Florida after pitching six innings and allowing only the Alex Gonzalez home run. Hand walked one and struck out six.
Catcher John Buck had two of Florida's four hits on the evening.
The win gives Atlanta sole possession of second place in the National League East, three full games behind the Philadelphia Phillies.
