Sophomore slumps often hit young players making their way into the league, but not Braves first baseman Freddie Freeman. The 22-year-old has surpassed all expectations thus far in 2012, hitting .298/.320/.544 while leading Atlanta in home runs and RBIs.
For the second time this season, Freeman took home a big time award for the National League.
According to a release from the league offices, Freeman was named the NL Player of the Week after hitting .367 with three homers, 10 RBI and posting an OPS of 1.130. The Braves went 4-3 as a team.
In addition to Freeman, Chipper Jones had a fine week as well. The 40-year-old third baseman was the other nominee for NL Player of the Week after hitting .429 with two homers and plating nine runs. Not too bad for a guy playing on one knee, no?
A big congratulations to Freddie. Keep on swinging, big guys. Just maybe take a few more walks.
