Chipper Jones has missed the last three weeks with a lower leg injury, but it appears he could finally be returning soon.
The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported Thursday that Jones will participate in a rehab stint in Class-A Rome on Saturday and Sunday. Jones had hoped to avoid a rehab assignment, but reluctantly agreed.
From the AJC:
Recovering from surgery to drain a hematoma from his lower left leg, Jones is eligible to come off the DL Friday. He said this week he’d prefer not to go on a minor-league rehab assignment and would rather be activated and play against the Toronto Blue Jays during this weekend’s series at Turner Field.
But the 40-year-old third baseman said all along that he wouldn’t rule out a brief rehab stint and that he was "haggling" with team officials this week during the Marlins series. He said during a TV interview on SportSouth during Thursday’s game that he had agreed to the weekend assignment at Rome.
