The Atlanta Braves have placed right-handed pitcher Tommy Hanson on the 15-day disabled list with a lower back strain. Hanson had struggled since the All-Star Break and saw a substantial dip in velocity on his fastball, so the move should allow him to get healthy and rest his arm. He is expected to return in about two weeks once the stint is up.
Right-handed relief pitcher Cory Gearrin has been called up from Triple-A Gwinnett. Gearrin is a very effective pitcher against righties with his sidearm delivery, although he has issues against left-handed batters.
As for Paul Maholm, manager Fredi Gonzalez elected to not say who would be replaced when he is added to the roster later in the week. It would seem likely that Jair Jurrjens would be the one sent down to the minors, but that is simply speculation at this point.
Maholm is expected to start on Saturday. Kris Medlen will make the start on Sunday.
