NFC South Standings: Falcons Extend Lead, Saints Fall, Bucs Take Second, And Panthers Win!

New, 1 comment

The Atlanta Falcons have held the lead in the NFC South standings since beating the New Orleans Saints in Week 3, though whether that's been an outright lead or a tiebreaker advantage has fluctuated. It's back to an in-the-clear half-game lead over Tampa Bay, and is guaranteed to stay at least a tiebreaker edge for one more week since the Birds have a bye next weekend.

Tampa Bay takes over the second spot by outlasting the St. Louis Rams. It is to the NFC's everlasting shame that the Bucs, Redskins and Bears are in line for playoff spots at this point. Expect the Eagles, Packers and Saints to correct as much of that as possible in the coming weeks.

The Saints continued their disappointing Super Bowl chaser by accepting a Browns blowout. Drew Brees threw himself a pick twelve to 265-pound David Bowens (I've typed that exact phrase in about four different posts now), and the defending champs are in need of answers. The questions that need answering include, "Who do we play next week?" The answer is, "The Steelers," to which the response is, "[expletive]." I actually think the Saints win that one.

Last but not least in our hearts, the Panthers notched a win over Mike Singletary's 49ers. The last thing the Falcons need is for the Aquacats to find some momentum and start picking off a contender or two, but let's cautiously monitor this situation while making jokes so nobody realizes we're worried about losing to a desperate John Fox in Week 17. Thanks.
