Mike Singletary's Job Is Safe - For Now

The Atlanta Falcons may hold Mike Singletary's future in their hands on Sunday. Another blowout like last season's and the Falcons may be preparing for a 49ers team coached by someone else.

From Mike Sando:

So as the temperatures drop, Singletary's seat will be warming up even more. But the 49ers believe that the NFC West is wide open, nobody will run away with the division, and Singletary still represents this team's best chance to have a winning season.

What also helps Singletary's staying power is that the 49ers do not have a logical head-coaching successor on staff that they would be confident to promote to interim head coach.

San Francisco defensive coordinator Greg Manusky has a strong reputation, but he never has been a head coach. Thus the 49ers are sticking with Singletary -- for now.

But the team is making a stadium push and that always factors into a team's head coaching situation as well.
