Asante Samuel Trade To The Atlanta Falcons Close, According To Report

Philadelphia Eagles cornerback Asante Samuel is likely headed to the Atlanta Falcons, reports ESPN's Adam Schefter:

The 31-year-old veteran would add much needed depth to a Falcons' secondary where Dunta Robinson hasn't lived up to expectations since his signing in 2010 and corner Brent Grimes is unhappy with his contractual status. Samuel has 19 interceptions over his last three seasons as an Eagle, compared to Robinson's three.

The NFL Network's Michael Lombardi reported that Samuel had to agree to a reduction of his current contract for a trade to be made (he's owed $21.5 million over the next two season). Entering the week, the Falcons only have six total draft picks in the wake of 2011's Julio Jones deal: one second round pick, one third, one fifth, one sixth and two seventh-rounders. The assumption is that Atlanta wouldn't part with anything higher than a sixth-round pick.
