Hawks Free Agency 2012: Small Forward Still Area Of Need

The Atlanta Hawks have been rumored as being in on several different free agents but it appears that the team's biggest need is at the small forward position. The trades of Joe Johnson and Marvin Williams leaves Atlanta without the two players that spent the most time at the position last season. Head coach Larry Drew indicated that the wing position would be a major area of need.

"We have to look at the wing area to bring somebody in that can help us," Drew said. "With having the six spots filled [including] the two draft picks on the roster, solidifying on the wing becomes more of a priority than a ‘big.' We could add another big but, right now, certainly the priority is strengthening the wing area and then possibly adding another big."

Peachtree Hoops writer Jason Walker recently took a look at the Hawks roster and projected the potential depth chart with the current group of players. If the season started today Atlanta would likely go with either a three-guard lineup of with Jeff Teague, Devin Harris and Anthony Morrow in the starting lineup alongside Josh Smith and Al Horford or Atlanta could bring Morrow off the bench and start Zaza Pachulia sliding Horford and Smith up along the frontcourt. However the Hawks decide to start it is clear that they need depth at the small forward position.
